Researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH Zurich) have developed a lightweight composite material that can perform self-inspection.

This lightweight material can use color changes to indicate internal deformation, so that possible problems with the material can be understood at an early stage. The material is alternately laminated with plastic polymer and artificial nacre. The artificial nacre is modeled by mussel shells and is composed of countless glass sheets arranged in parallel. It is extremely hard and resistant to breakage. In the plastic polymer layer, the researchers added a kind of indicator molecule, but when the polymer is stretched, the molecule will be activated, thereby changing its fluorescence. The more the material is stretched, the more molecules are activated and the more intense the fluorescence. But as of now, this material only exists in the laboratory's proof of concept.
